Microsoft MSI Cleanup Utility (msicuu2.exe) is a cleanup utility from Microsoft. This small but powerful utility helps the users to remove any failed installations from their machines.
To use msicuu2.exe utility, user has to first download msicuu2.exe from Microsoft or any other reliable site. As it is already pointed out that this utility will help you to remove any failed installations, for the sake of this article lets presume that installation of Office 2010 ended up on failure note. The remainder of this article will guide you through the steps involved in removing Office 2010 from your machine.
Step 1: Download msicuu2.exe and install the Windows Installer Cleanup by double clicking the exe file.
Step 2: After installing the msicuu2.exe goto start -> All Programs -> Windows Install Clean Up or search for “Windows Install Clean Up”.
Step 3: The service will list all the failed installations. In our case we need to remove the Office 2010 from our machine. So, please chose Office 2010 from the list.
Step 4: After choosing Office 2010, click on the Remove button and exit the utility.
Tip: If you have any other versions of Microsoft Office or stand alone application like just Microsoft Word, then please remove those software’s also.
Step 5: As a precautionary step, save all your data and close all the applications that are currently opened.
Step 6: If you are using Windows Vista,Windows 7, Windows 8, goto “Start” and in the Search Box type “regedit” (without quotes) and press enter. Windows XP users, click Start -> Run, type “regedit”. It will open up a window.
Step 7: In the resulting windows you can see two panes. The Left pane and the Right Pane. You will find the registry tree on the left pane. Expand it and traverse the tree in the following way.
Look for HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Microsoft -> Office HKEY_LOCAL_MACHIN -> Software -> Microsoft ->Office
Step 8: Once you have navigated to Office, please right click on “Office”. In the resulting menu you can find a set of options. Click “Delete” to delete the office keys.
Step 9: After deleting the keys, open up Windows Explorer and then browse to “C:\Program Files” folder. Rename the following folders, it it exists
- “Microsoft Office” to “Microsoft Office OLD”
- “OfficeUpdate” to “OfficeUpdateOLD”
- “OfficeUpdate14″ to “OfficeUpdate14OLD”
Step 10: After updating the folder names, again goto Start and in the Search Box type “%Temp%” without any quotes. A window will be opened. Select all the items in the window and delete the items.
It may throw a error message that some item cannot be deleted. In such cases please skip them, as it is not going to affect our process.
Step 11: We need to do some more cleanups to make sure we’re not bloating the recycle bin. The final step is to empty the recycle bin which you can do by right clicking on the recycle bin and Chose “Empty Recycle Bin”.
Step 12. Restart your machine and install a fresh copy of Office 2010.
